Awakening, Sacrifice, and Living a Life of Sincere Worship
Introduction
Surah Al-Hajj is a unique Surah containing both Makkan and Madinan verses. It combines powerful imagery of the Day of Judgment, reminders of Allah’s signs, and deep teachings about Hajj, sacrifice, and sincerity.
At its heart, the Surah calls humanity to wake up spiritually and live with awareness of accountability.
1. The Earthquake of the Hour: A Wake-Up Call
“O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the earthquake of the Hour is a tremendous thing.” (22:1)
“The Day you see it, every nursing mother will forget what she was nursing…” (22:2)
Key Learning
- The Day of Judgment is real and overwhelming.
- Awareness of the Hereafter shapes how we live today.
- Spiritual wakefulness begins with recognizing accountability.
2. Human Doubt vs Divine Creation
Some people question resurrection:
“And among the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge…” (22:3)
Allah responds by pointing to human creation:
“O mankind, if you are in doubt about the Resurrection, then [consider that] We created you from dust…” (22:5)
Key Learning
- Creation itself is proof of resurrection.
- Doubt often comes from neglecting reflection.
