Every person leaves something behind.

Some leave buildings, businesses, wealth, or possessions. Others leave memories, lessons, kindness, and opportunities that continue helping people long after they are gone.

The story of a teacher requesting backpacks filled with school supplies instead of flowers at her funeral is a beautiful reminder of this truth. Even in her final moments, she was thinking about children and education. She understood that flowers would eventually fade, but books, notebooks, pencils, and school supplies could help a child learn, grow, and build a brighter future.

This story encourages us to think about an important question:

What will people remember about us?

Will they remember the things we owned, or the lives we touched?

In the Qur’an, Allah encourages us to do good, help others, and leave behind beneficial actions. A kind word, a helping hand, knowledge shared with others, or support given to someone in need can continue benefiting people long after we are gone.

This lesson is appreciated across many faiths and cultures. Whether Muslim, Christian, Jewish, or from any other background, people admire those who dedicate their lives to helping others. Compassion, generosity, and service are values that bring humanity together.

The teacher’s request was simple, yet powerful. Instead of receiving something for herself, she created an opportunity for others to give. The backpacks became more than school supplies. They became symbols of hope, encouragement, and kindness.

As young people, we may not have great wealth or influence, but we can still make a difference. We can help a classmate who is struggling, share knowledge with a friend, volunteer in our community, care for our neighbours, and support causes that improve the lives of others.

A meaningful life is not measured only by what we achieve for ourselves. It is also measured by the opportunities we create for others.

Perhaps the best legacy is not what we leave behind for our families, but what we leave behind for humanity.

Reflection Questions

  1. What do you hope people will remember about you?
  2. How can you help someone in your school or community this week?
  3. Why do you think education is one of the greatest gifts we can give to others?
  4. What small act of kindness could you do today that might have a lasting impact on someone else?

Ayanoor Reflection

The greatest legacy is not what we accumulate, but what we contribute. When we help others learn, grow, and succeed, our kindness continues long after we are gone.
